Why Switch From Kibble To Fresh Food?
What are the key benefits of feeding pets fresh food, whether raw or cooked?
Feeding your pet a fresh, well-made human-grade food tailored to their specific needs provides a wide range of health benefits. Scientific research shows that such diets can promote longevity and improve key aspects of health, including skin, eyes, bones, and teeth. These diets are known to reduce inflammation, boost the immune system, and enhance digestion. Many pet owners notice positive changes, such as increased energy, improved skin and coat condition, and less odorous stools. Additionally, pets fed fresh foods tend to have cleaner teeth compared to those on ultra-processed kibble.
So by choosing fresh food, you are not just feeding your pet - you are investing in their long-term health and vitality.
What makes ultra-processed kibble bad?
While most ultra-processed kibble meets the basic nutritional standards set by AAFCO or FEDIAF, its manufacturing process presents significant concerns.
The high temperatures used in kibble production can create harmful compounds known as advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which have been linked to various health issues, including cancer. Just as we avoid overcooked or charred foods due to their potential carcinogenic effects, feeding our pets kibble that has undergone extreme heat processes multiple times is cause for concern.
In addition to AGEs, the high-heat processing causes substantial nutrient loss, forcing manufacturers to add synthetic vitamins and minerals to compensate. This heavy reliance on artificial supplements underscores the limitations of kibble as a truly nourishing diet. Can additives and flavor enhancers really replace the essential nutrients that are lost in the process? It is akin to eating cereal for every meal, every day, for the rest of your life!
By understanding these factors, we hope you can make informed decisions about your pets' diets and prioritize options that offer real, wholesome nutrition.
So, why does my vet recommend kibble and discourage feeding fresh food?
The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) advises caution when feeding fresh food, particularly raw diets, due to concerns about harmful pathogens, risks to vulnerable individuals, and nutrient imbalances from improper formulations. As a result, veterinarians often recommend ultra-processed kibble, which addresses these concerns in two main ways:
- Pathogen Control Through Extreme Heat Processing: Kibble is produced using multiple extreme heat processes to eliminate harmful bacteria and parasites. While this effectively sterilizes the food, it also denatures proteins, reducing the overall nutritional quality.
- Compliance with Nutritional Standards: Kibble manufacturers typically collaborate with veterinarians to ensure their products meet the basic nutritional requirements established by organizations such as AAFCO, FEDIAF, or NRC. To compensate for the loss of natural nutrients during extreme heating, synthetic vitamins and minerals are often added to the formulas.
At Tru-Raw, we take a different approach to address these same concerns while maintaining the natural quality of our food:
- Human-Grade Ingredients Only: All our ingredients are human-grade and sourced from federally-inspected suppliers. Each batch undergoes rigorous pathogen testing, far exceeding typical standards in kibble production. Lab test results are available online for full transparency.
- Versatile Preparation Options: Our products can be safely served raw or cooked. For those concerned about potential pathogens, the food can be lightly cooked or baked to ensure safety while preserving nutrients.
- Veterinarian-Formulated and Approved: Our recipes are formulated and reviewed by veterinarians to meet the nutritional standards set by AAFCO, FEDIAF, and NRC, whether served raw or cooked. Complete nutritional analyses are readily accessible online.
- Formulated With Whole Foods Only: We derive all our nutritional value from natural whole foods, eliminating the need for synthetic supplements. This approach ensures maximum bioavailability and absorption of nutrients.
We encourage you to discuss our products with your veterinarian to better understand how we address the concerns highlighted by the CVMA. Veterinarians are also welcome to reach out to us directly for more information about our processes and formulations.
Can my pets contract Salmonella or other bacterial infections from raw meat?
Yes, pets can potentially contract Salmonella or other bacterial infections from raw meat, although their digestive systems are generally more resilient to these bacteria compared to humans.
To minimize this risk, we take extensive precautions. All our products undergo third-party testing for harmful bacteria, including Salmonella, Escherichia coli (E. coli), and Listeria monocytogenes, with results available online for full transparency. Additionally, our products can be safely cooked to eliminate any potential pathogens while still providing a complete and balanced diet.
For safe handling of raw foods, we recommend following the guidelines on the Government of Canada’s website: Food Safety and You
What does “human grade” mean?
"Human-grade" food refers to products that meet federal or provincial standards for human consumption. This means the ingredients are of the same quality and safety as those intended for people. The entire process - from sourcing and manufacturing, to storage and shipping - must comply with strict sanitary and quality control measures.
However, the term "human-grade" is sometimes used loosely, especially because pet food is not regulated by the CFIA, which oversees food safety for humans. For example, ingredients may originate from a human-grade facility but become unfit for human consumption due to improper storage during procurement - such as inadequate temperature control that promotes the growth of harmful bacteria. Despite this, some companies may still be able to label their products as "fresh" if they employ a process of eliminating bacteria during manufacturing, even though the ingredients did not maintain human-grade status throughout the entire process.
To ensure true human-grade quality, always verify whether the product consistently meets CFIA standards throughout the entire supply chain, from sourcing and manufacturing, to storage and shipping.
Are all commercial premade raw or cooked foods made the same?
Unfortunately, no. The quality and formulation of raw or fresh pet foods can vary widely between brands. Factors such as ingredient sourcing, nutritional balance, and manufacturing processes are all critical in determining the overall quality of the pet food. To ensure you are giving your pet the best, we encourage you to focus on these key elements when evaluating the food:
- Choose brands that use human-grade, ethically sourced ingredients. The fewer synthetic additives, the better! A properly formulated diet should minimize the need for synthetic vitamins and minerals.
- Ensure the food’s nutritional formulation is clear and meets the standards set by organizations like AAFCO or FEDIAF.
- Was a veterinarian involved in creating the recipe, or is it simply a mix of meats, bones, and organs? Did you know fiber is essential in all types of diets?
- Check for feeding guidelines tailored to the food’s specific caloric levels. Each food is different, and improper feeding could lead to overfeeding or underfeeding your pet.
By equipping yourself with this knowledge, you can make informed decisions that promote your pet's health and well-being.
Can feeding raw make my pets aggressive?
No, this is a common myth. Aggression related to food is known as resource guarding, a behavioral issue that requires professional guidance. It is not caused by a raw diet. If your pet exhibits signs of resource guarding, consult a professional trainer or veterinarian for appropriate advice.
Starting The Journey
How can I transition my pet from kibble to raw or fresh food?
Transitioning your pet to a new diet requires an understanding of their digestive system. A sudden change in food may cause temporary discomfort, but this does not mean that one diet is superior to another. It simply indicates that your pet’s gastrointestinal tract is adjusting to the new food.
Supporting gut health during this period is essential as a balanced microbial community promotes healthy digestion. An imbalance, known as dysbiosis, can occur in pets that have been on highly-processed kibble or wet pet food for a prolonged period. Senior pets or those with sensitive stomachs may find transitions more challenging.
To make the process smoother, start by mixing 25% of the new food with 75% of the old food, gradually increasing the ratio of new food over 10 days.
Some pet owners also use creative strategies, such as offering the new food as a treat or “accidentally” dropping it on the floor (because we know our pets are excellent vacuum cleaners).
Note: Cats can be more resistant to change as they tend to imprint on specific foods early in life. A good strategy is to consider your cat’s current preferences. "Do they eat wet food or kibble?" "Do they like their food served warm or cold?" If your cat is accustomed to wet food, transitioning to raw might be easier due to the similar texture. For kibble-fed cats, lightly cooking the new food can help ease the transition. Additionally, adjusting the temperature of the food by heating or chilling can also help accommodate a picky cat’s preferences.
What protein should I start with?
Begin with a single protein like chicken or turkey, which are great starter options. Once your pet adjusts, you can introduce new proteins.
My pet is experiencing vomiting or diarrhea after transitioning. What should I do?
Digestive issues during diet changes are common. It may take time for your pet's gastrointestinal tract to adjust.
Ensure your pet has access to fresh water and consider supplements like kefir or pumpkin to support digestion.
For pets with sensitive stomachs, we recommend cooking our food for easier digestion.
Are there additional symptoms that may arise during the transition?
When transitioning your pet from a kibble-based diet to a fresh food diet, some pets may go through a process known as detoxification. During this period, your pet’s body is shedding accumulated toxins and residues from their previous diet. This phase can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks, but not all pets will experience noticeable detox symptoms.
If detoxification does occur, you might notice temporary signs such as gastrointestinal upset, inconsistent stools, watery eyes, increased shedding, or excess earwax. To support your dog during this time, provide plenty of fresh water and regular exercise. You may also consider adding digestion-supporting supplements like kefir or pumpkin to their diet.
For pets with sensitive stomachs, we recommend cooking our food for easier digestion.
I cannot afford to feed my pet 100% fresh food. Do you have any suggestions?
We understand that pet parents may have challenges in providing a 100% fresh diet for their pets. The good news is that it does not have to be an all-or-nothing approach. We firmly believe that integrating even small portions of fresh food into your pet's diet will still yield significant benefits and contribute to their overall health and well-being!
Our Recipes
Is your food complete and balanced for all life stages (adult pets, puppies / kittens, lactating or gestating pets)?
Yes! Our recipes meet AAFCO, FEDIAF, and NRC standards for all life stages.
For lactating dogs nursing more than eight puppies, it is recommended to consult your veterinarian to ensure that any additional nutritional needs are met.
Why did you choose to balance your recipes with AAFCO, FEDIAF, and NRC?
AAFCO and NRC standards primarily cater to active adult pets, leaving less active pets' nutritional needs unaddressed.
To bridge this gap, we incorporated FEDIAF guidelines, which also sets nutritional standards for less active pets. This is a crucial step given that a significant portion of the pet population falls into this category.
Should I give additional supplements for the meals?
No supplementation is necessary as our recipes meet all nutritional standards!
Can I cook all the recipes?
Absolutely! Our recipes can be served raw, lightly cooked, or oven-baked while still meeting the nutritional guidelines set by AAFCO, FEDIAF, and NRC. Additionally, we use a unique hydrolyzed natural bone powder, which allows for safe cooking without the risk of intestinal blockages - providing you with the flexibility and peace of mind!
How come your recipes are "boneless"? Isn't bone necessary for calcium?
Bones are vital for calcium intake, but feeding cooked bones can be dangerous, especially for small dogs and cats, due to the risk of intestinal blockages. To address this, we searched for an ingredient that mimics bone in composition yet remains safe for cooking. Here is what we discovered:
- Bone meal powders: A finely milled version of bones, providing calcium in the form of hydroxyapatite, just like natural bones. However, bone meal is usually sourced from beef or pork, which can trigger allergies in some pets. It also lacks collagen, as it is typically processed out and sold separately.
- Eggshell or marine shell powder: An alternative that also poses allergy risks for some pets depending on which animal the powder is sourced from. The calcium here is in the form of calcium carbonate, which is less bioavailable than calcium from bones.
- Seaweed calcium: A plant-based option, free from allergens, but it also provides calcium carbonate, which is less bioavailable than calcium hydroxyapatite.
- Synthetic calcium: Commonly used in cooked formulations due to its allergen-free nature, but it comes in the form of calcium with lower bioavailability.
After extensive research and supplier consultations, we found a unique solution: hydrolyzed salmon bone-collagen powder. This ingredient is hydrolyzed to prevent food intolerances (i.e., allergies) and minimally processed to retain calcium hydroxyapatite and collagen. It not only offers the bioavailability of bone calcium without nutritional losses, but it also ensures that our products can be cooked and remain safe for pets with allergies.
Do you use any meat by-products, rendered meats, or mechanically separated meats?
No, we only use boneless lean muscle meats in our formulation!
Do you use high-pressure processing?
No, our products are minimally processed through a simple grinding and freezing process.
Is it safe to feed your product to my pet if they are ill?
For personalized guidance on this matter, we recommend consulting a holistic veterinarian or a veterinarian that specializes in nutrition. If your veterinarian requires detailed nutritional analysis of our foods, we have complete information available for reference on every product page.
If your pet is experiencing digestive issues or difficulty keeping food down, we recommend gently cooking our foods to aid in digestion.
